The Grand, Southport

The Grand, Southport, Merseyside

The Grand is a luxury five-star hotel and restaurant experience, located on the beautiful tree-lined boulevard of Lord Street in Southport. The Grade II listed building is steeped in history, built 100 years ago as a car showroom. It was later converted into a luxury cinema in 1938, before reopening as an independent bingo club in in 1966 and then a casino in 1999. The incredible location closed permanently in 2007, before its exceptional heritage was brought back to life as it stands today.

The project, seeking to blend historic features with modern technology, necessitated the development of a new lighting scheme. The specific objective was to craft an illuminating façade that would accentuate the historic architectural elements of the building. To achieve this, the chosen system incorporated Traxon Pro-Point Small Wall Washer RGBW fixtures, strategically positioned to wash the columns at the front of the hotel in a dynamic glow that changes colour. The control of this dynamic colour wash is facilitated through the use of ECUE Core S and DMX Node controllers.

The impact of the updated lighting scheme is particularly pronounced at the front of the hotel, where it succeeds in drawing attention to the signage for The Grand Brasserie, Harry’s Bar, and Skybar. The use of luxury lighting has effectively revived the ambiance, instilling a sense of old-world glamour and enhancing the overall fine-dining experience.

Expressing his satisfaction with the collaboration, Paul Hindle, Managing Director at Lumenata, commented, “It was a privilege to work with ECS on this project. Upon receiving the brief, we knew that ECS could help us to meet the expectations for the client. The system, while being modern and efficient, achieves the effect of creating a historic and timeless aesthetic. The facilities manager of the hotel can easily program and control the dynamic lighting to create the desired effect, enchanting guests with the building’s grand appearance.” The partnership between Lumenata and ECS successfully realised a lighting solution that seamlessly blended modern efficiency with the timeless charm desired by the client.
