Hillsborough Stadium is a large, traditional-style football stadium best known for being the home to Sheffield Wednesday FC, since 1899. When the old, outdated lighting systems and controls needed to be updated, ECS were chosen.

The primary objective of the design initiative was to introduce a dynamic lighting system to the Hillsborough Stadium, specifically tailored for games and fixture events, inclusive of a captivating dynamic light show. The existing lighting infrastructure at the stadium, which had remained untouched for over 30 years, necessitated a comprehensive overhaul to bring a rejuvenated lighting system to the club. ECS was enlisted to collaborate with the supplier, contractor, and manufacturer Midstream Lighting to fulfill this ambitious goal.

Under the collaborative effort, the outdated system was replaced with a modernised setup that catered to the needs of both the club and the championship league. ECS undertook the extensive task of removing all antiquated ballasts, ignitors, old control gear, and more than 70 outdated fixtures. The newly implemented lighting system not only addressed immediate needs but also showcased adaptability. This feature enables the addition of extra floodlights to the system in the future, contributing to the futureproofing of the stadium’s lighting infrastructure. Furthermore, meeting Premier League compliance standards was a key consideration in the selection and installation of the new system.

ECS, appointed through Midstream Lighting as their technical support, Supply, and controls partners for the project, played a pivotal role throughout the entire process. Collaborating closely with Midstream Lighting, ECS provided technical support for product selection, conducted site trials, delivered installation training, performed full controls programming, and executed commissioning upon the completion of the installation. The lighting installation was carried out in the ‘Chansiri’ stand, while data and controls were strategically placed throughout the entire stadium.

James Brunt from Midstream expressed satisfaction, stating, “When the old system needed to be updated at the Hillsborough Stadium, ECS were the perfect choice to provide the controls and program the system. Thanks to them, the stadium now hosts an all-singing, all-dancing light show. It’s great that the club can now enable so many settings to be self-programmed before or after any matches.” The successful collaboration between ECS and Midstream Lighting has transformed Hillsborough Stadium into a venue with a modern and dynamic lighting system, enhancing the overall spectator experience.
